Any licensed driver can take a defensive driving course if they want to. However, if you are trying to get a traffic ticket dismissed, the state does have some eligibility requirements. First of all, you are not eligible to have your ticket dismissed if you have a commercial driver’s license. Also, as mentioned above, you can't take the course to get your ticket dismissed if you've already done so in the past 12 months. Getting your ticket dismissed won't be an option for you if you were clocked going more than 95 miles per hour or more than 25 miles per hour above the posted speed limit. Finally, you must plead guilty or no contest to the ticket to be allowed to take the course. Don't worry about it-as long as you take the class, the ticket won't show up on your driving record at all.
For the insurance discount, you will need to check with your insurance company to see if there are any eligibility requirements other than simply completing the course and sending in the certificate. Some companies may have additional requirements, such as a clean driving record without any accidents or violations. Also, the amount of the discount, if it’s offered, varies from company to company.
